Dawn, The visuals you provided in your task will help the students to problem solve. The students will be faced with a real-life example. You could actually tie this lesson to a whole group reading project such as White Fang, where the students become the characters of the book. Will you have the students to create a visual or how will your students present their answers? Good Job!
Dawn - I like the problem that you presented to your students. Finding a way for them to go on their sledding field trip will definitely be motivating to them! After seeing the Voicethread, as a student I would have a couple questions. My first question would be, can we solicit the help of parents to help drive and provide more sleds? Also, can we schedule different classes to go sledding on different days, or do all 172 students go on the same day? Perhaps you could end the voicethread with some specific "guidelines" that they will need to follow in order to work toward finding a solution. I'm sure they'll be motivated to find a way to solve this problem! Sounds like fun!
Dawn, I love your problem. The more relevant the problem the more engaged the students will be. Cindy already gave you some very good suggestions on including specific guidelines for the student responses. My only question is personal. Are you really able to do this??? We aren’t allowed to change classes when the power is out in case someone trips in the “dark” (read: only emergency lighting that does provide plenty of light). I can’t imagine being allowed to take students off-campus for such an unstructured activity. I envy you your freedom.
